When Planes Fall Out of the Sky

I’ve been asked to blog about the plane crashes recently – especially the Malaysian flight shot down over Ukraine. I wish I had words of wisdom or brilliant phrases of comfort. But I have none of this. I have only the grief in my own heart. Grief knocks me to the ground where I can feel real again. Pain and grief can do that. They open our hearts to feelings, opening doors we would rather keep bolted shut.

malaysian-planeSuch events beg us to ask the existential question “Why?” and “Why those people?” The answer isn’t: “ The Russians thought it was a military plane.” The question goes deeper. “Why war?” For that question I REALLY don’t have an answer… except maybe to look within and see where I hold grudges, anger, resentment, and fear.  I can use outside events as a pointer to where I need to heal my own emotions.

Perhaps the question isn’t “Why did they die?” Perhaps the better question is “What are each of us going to do with it?” Are we going to hate? Feel hopeless and ring our hands? Or are we going to love even harder? Everyone. Every minute.

When we choose to love harder, the human angels who died in those crashes give us a high-five. Their torch has been passed.

Thanks Jonette for your honesty. Sometimes we really don’t know why things happen, we don’t have the answer. Yet, I can feel in the silence, on another level, there is something happening. It is not a story to be told, but there is a connection. It’s about the circle of life, death and birth. Birthing from the other planes. I can feel it in my body. You know I am dutch and although no one in my circles died, I know people who knew someone on that plane. The quote that comes nearest to how I feel comes from time.com: ‘The Dutch people who died on MH17 mirror their own rapidly evolving society, and remind the rest of us that our futures don’t lie in tribalism, but in expanding our connections’. Thanks for connecting, Jonette.

The fact you chose to say what are we going to do WITH IT and not about it……is sheer perfection for a preposition……and the “high-five” brightness is definitely a torch to be passed…..
Your use of the English language and the language of the heart ….great food for thought.
